Employment Category Limited Duration Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Laboratory Technician 2 position for the Cooperative Institute for Marine Ecosystem and Resources Studies (CIMERS) at Oregon State University (OSU).
This position will be located at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon.
This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 1 year from the appointment begin date.
Performs routine and standardized chemical, microbiological, physical, or other laboratory tests following well-defined written instructions and procedures.
Develops new analytical procedures in coordination with other staff.
Performs preliminary data quality assurance, statistics and helps with the preparation of scientific manuscripts for peer-review.

Key Responsibilities 50% Extraction of lipid samples using a modified Folch Procedure Derivatizing lipid samples to form fatty acid methyl esters Interpret results of analyses and run correlations with other tests before reporting results.
15% Chemically cleaning glassware 10% Performs routine husbandry of marine invertebrates in the lab Helps with tissue sampling in marine invertebrates 10% Presenting scientific materials and helping with peer-reviewed manuscript preparation 5% Entering data on lipid classes and fatty acids into Excel spreadsheets 5% Operation of a gas chromatograph HP 7890 5% Operation of a TLC-FID latroscan Mark V What We Require Two years of experience performing routine, standardized analytical tests and laboratory procedures in accordance with well-defined written instructions and high school courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or any course which included laboratory work; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience.
NOTE: An Associate’s Degree in Laboratory Science may substitute for one year of the required experience.
What You Will Need This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq.
Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess, and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have Master’s degree in life sciences/ biological/chemistry or marine studies Familiar with lab safety protocols and hazardous materials.
Experience with operation of a gas chromatographer.
Experience with operation of an Iatroscan.
Experience with Folch-type lipid extractions.
Experience with acid-catalyst derivatization procedures.
Experience with sampling marine phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish, and invertebrates.
Experience with data base maintenance and Excel.
Experience with shipping and handling biological samples.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule The position involves chemical analyses in a fume hood.
Working in a marine chemistry dry laboratory and occasionally sampling animals from a wet laboratory facility.
