75 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Environmental Justice and Sustainability Instructor position.
Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
A 0.
75 FTE, 12 month position is broadly equivalent to a traditional full time, 9 month position but includes additional benefits such as year round pay and paid vacation leave.
Appointment at the Instructor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
The primary purpose of this position is to develop and deliver on-campus and online (Ecampus) courses in environmental justice and sustainability for the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at OSU.
In addition to instruction, the incumbent will be responsible for course and curriculum development, online course and digital content development, in part in collaboration with other faculty, and coordination of online and face-to-face course content.
This position may direct student research projects and internships and serve on student committees.
This position supports the Geography Program’s themes of global change risk and resilience, earth system science, and geospatial modeling and analysis.

Key Responsibilities 80% – Instruction: Teach courses on campus and online (Ecampus) in environmental justice, sustainability, and other courses aligned with the incumbent’s expertise and programmatic needs.
Demonstrate command of the subject matter taught and undertake course and curriculum development and pedagogical development.
Prepare and present class materials and assignments, grade assignments, and post student grades.
Maintain office hours for courses.
Maintain and update course content to meet programmatic needs and improve student success.
Collaborate with other program faculty and OSU Ecampus on curriculum content and development.
Dependent on course size, may supervise teaching assistants.
Contribute to social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts; provide mentoring and opportunities for students from underrepresented groups; enable the advancement of diverse perspectives; and promote equitable outcomes among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups.
Interact professionally, effectively, and in a timely fashion with students and University staff.
Mentor and advise students on their development, including the choices they face relating to academic program, research projects, or career directions, and interact with students in more informal settings.
10% – Professional Currency and Program Development: Engage in activities to maintain currency and sustain professional growth in the instructor’s discipline and pedagogy.
In coordination with the Geography and Geospatial Science Program Director and College administration, contribute to the development and success of the Geography and Geospatial Science Program through development and promotion of innovative learning opportunities for students, faculty mentoring in online teaching, or other areas consistent with personal expertise and programmatic needs.
Direct student research projects and internships, and serve on student committees as needed.
10% – Service: Participate as needed on College and University committees and perform other service that contributes to the effectiveness of the College, University, and profession.
This may include, but is not limited to, any of the following: Serve or lead College and University-level committees, including advising student clubs.
Support program excellence through strategic planning and student recruitment efforts.
Serve professional societies or community organizations.
Participate in activities that increase and promote justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, such as search advocate training, diversity training, anti-racism pedagogy, or mentoring students from underrepresented groups.
Participate in outreach and engagement activities related to the academic program.
What You Will Need PhD in Geography or a closely related discipline by the start date of the position.
Academic background in environmental justice or risk and vulnerability studies.
Relevant teaching experience and evidence of or commitment to inclusive excellence in teaching.
Demonstrated commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and a commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
Effective communicator in oral and written forms.
What We Would Like You to Have Academic background in or ability to teach environmental assessment and/or sustainability.
Experience teaching across modalities, including online courses in Geography and Geospatial Science, and proficiency with online teaching platforms such as Canvas.
Experience with incorporating GIS and geospatial analyses into teaching.
Student mentoring or advising experience, including working with underrepresented groups.
Experience in curriculum development or vision for Geography course design and pedagogy.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule The incumbent may work remotely as agreed upon with the supervisor, but is required to hold on-campus office hours when teaching on-campus classes.
