Job Summary The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology is seeking an hourly Academic Wage: Faculty Research Assistant.
This is a part-time (0.
50 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term position.
This position is anticipated to last approximately twelve (12) months.
This position supports plant pathology research that seeks to understand the basic biology and pathogenicity of organisms associated with Fusarium canker.
On a day-to-day basis, this will involve preparation, maintenance, and storage of pathogen cultures; DNA and RNA extractions; application of diagnostic assays; contributing to greenhouse and growth chamber studies to understand pathogen and disease reactions to environmental conditions; assisting with greenhouse operations and production of plant materials; and support for field studies.
The incumbent will work closely with other scientists, technicians, and students to plan and conduct experiments as part of a research team.

Key Responsibilities 65% — Prepares growth media, handles pathogen cultures such as transferring and long-term storage.
Contributes to, and provides, technical assistance with molecular diagnostics, including serological assays, DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, and sequence analysis.
Contributes to scientific communications.
20% — Contributes to greenhouse operations and plant production to support needs of the research group, including growing and maintenance.
10% — Provides technical assistance for field studies, including disease assessments, plot maintenance, or administration of treatments.
Maintains safe and functional equipment and work areas in laboratory, greenhouse, headhouse, and field locations.
5% — Enters, tabulates, and summarizes data.
What You Will Need Bachelor’s Degree in Plant Pathology, Biology, Horticulture, Microbiology, or related field, and work experience related to the position, specifically in aseptic technique, manipulating cultures, research greenhouse operations, and basic molecular biology procedures.
Experience in research in greenhouse, laboratory, and field settings.
Ability to work effectively in team environments with diverse individuals.
Excellent organizational skills to manage time and multiple research demands.
Excellent spoken and written English skills to communicate effectively with team members.
Able and willing to travel within Oregon, work in adverse weather conditions if needed, and occasionally travel overnight to field plots.
This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a current, valid driver license.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq.
Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
