Position Details Position Information Department Crop and Soil Science (ACS) Classification Title Bio Science Research Tech 3 Job Title Biological Sciences Research Technician 3 Appointment Type Classified Staff Job Location Corvallis Benefits Eligible Full-Time, benefits eligible Employment Category Regular Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Sciences Research Technician 3 position for the Crop and Soil Science at Oregon State University (OSU).
The BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH TECHNICIAN 3 will provide technical support to the USDA-ARS Hop Breeding and Genetics Program with the management and coordination of field experiments aimed at developing new disease resistant, high yielding, superior brewing-style hop cultivars.
The Biological Research Tech 3 will have substantial involvement with establishing research project procedures and coordinating activities for the research facility.
The incumbent will have extensive technical plant management skills and will be responsible for developing and maintaining the plant health and spray program consistent with project needs.
Work performed will include technical field management of hop plants and germplasms, as well as basic maintenance of buildings, grounds, and farm equipment.
This position independently conducts and reports research trials and has responsibility for instructing students in technical research procedures.

Key Responsibilities 50% Research Project and Farm Operations Manages project operations (field and greenhouse) and facility services as the research is being conducted; provides technical expertise in the proper physical care and maintenance of research plants; oversees, coordinates, and performs the cultivating, soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, pesticide spraying, irrigating, harvesting, processing, and packaging of experimental hops; Identifies disease and weed pressures and integrates appropriate spray programs and IPM; propagates, grows, and maintains hops in greenhouses, growth chambers, and fields; makes crosses at the direction of project leader to meet breeding objectives; determines plot size, layout, and location on the farm and prepares maps identifying all project locations; operates tractors with implements to remove and plant new nurseries in the field; directs and assigns work to student workers and seasonal employees as needed.
Will frequently push/pull, lift, and/or carry soil, plants, plant materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
20% Equipment and Facility Management Operates and maintains research equipment and facilities; prepares equipment specifications and obtains vendor bids for purchases; adapts, improves, designs, and/or fabricates specialized equipment to meet research needs; performs calibrations on spray equipment; maintains buildings, grounds, and hop trellis; repairs, maintains, and constructs upgrades of farm machinery (various tractors and implements), hop picker/harvester, bailer and pelleting machines, dryers, spray equipment, and other specialized research equipment; develop and oversee maintenance schedules for various farm equipment and machinery.
10% Research Experiments Conducts appropriate technical operations consistent with research project plans in the field and greenhouse; assists project leaders in planning technical functions of research projects; lays out and establishes test procedures; obtains samples; collects and summarizes data; reports results (written and verbally) to the research project leader.
10% Data Collection and Reporting Records and summarizes observations, measurements, and processes performed during field research as required by research project leader (e.
g.
, plant disease, plant vigor, growth habit, cone distribution, harvest yield); maintains spray log and pesticide inventory; ensures all data is collected as prescribed and may input data into a computer using basic spreadsheets.
10% Miscellaneous Leads and assigns work of five to ten seasonal or student workers, who harvest hops and collect data; instructs and trains subordinates in research techniques and data collection procedures; prepares orders for procurement of raw materials, supplies, and minor equipment.
Occasional travel is required – especially during the growing and harvest season.
What We Require A Bachelor’s degree in (specific area of biological science) and two years of experience related to the area of assignment at a Biological Science Research Technician 2 level.
Three additional years of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Science Research Technician 2 level may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.
What You Will Need This position requires strong communication skills, as incumbent will be meeting with project supervisor on regular basis.
Ability to obtain a State of Oregon Public Pesticide Applicator’s License, Category Agriculture Insecticide – Fungicide, within 60 days of hire and maintain while serving in the position.
Capable of operating machinery and using pesticides safely and proficiently.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision to organize, prioritize and accomplish goals while maintaining good management and safety practices.
Demonstrated communication skills both verbally and written.
Ability to work as a contributing member of a team.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq.
Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
