The School of HDFS was newly established in summer 2023 as part of an administrative re-organization of OSU’s College of Health (COH), and this recruitment is for the inaugural School Head.
The School Head will provide administrative leadership for the School of HDFS and will represent and promote the school in various settings including the College, University, local community, state of Oregon, nationally, and in academic and professional communities.
The incumbent will participate in scheduled meetings and other school and college events including faculty meetings, college administrative team meetings, individual meetings with the dean and associate dean for academic and faculty affairs, and other events as needed.
The School Head is also expected to conduct and direct independent research in area of expertise demonstrating a leadership role in collaborative research, commensurate with rank.
This position interfaces with the other schools in the COH, including the School of Population and Community Health (PCH) and School of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS).
The School Head also collaborates with the OSU Graduate School and other OSU administrative offices.
Other responsibilities include consulting with and carrying out the dean’s directives; playing a major role in budgeting and financial matters; working closely with development personnel to increase giving; working directly with extension personnel to increase outreach to the community; and serving as a member of the COH administrative team.

The School of HDFS comprises graduate and undergraduate programs.

Key Responsibilities 85%: Leadership and Administration: Represent the School and its programs to the college, university, local community, state of Oregon, nationally, and in the health sciences community.
Maintain service to college, university, and profession through service on committees.
Serve as the school liaison with the Graduate School and other OSU administrative offices.
Recruit, provide professional development for, and evaluate faculty members.
Support faculty professional development and advancement.
Oversee promotion and tenure review and recommendations at the school level.
Make merit-based salary increase decisions.
Encourage and support faculty in developing and sustaining high quality programs of externally funded research.
Maintain and enhance educational undergraduate and graduate programs and curricula.
Appoint, supervise, and evaluate academic faculty, professional faculty, classified staff, and graduate teaching assistants (GTAs).
Plan, assign, and approve work; discipline and reward; respond to grievances; hire, fire, and prepare performance evaluations for employees under school head supervision.
Provide fiscal management and strategic planning for the school.
Oversee school committees and preside at school meetings.
Develop and assign faculty workload distribution and teaching assignments.
Make school-level decisions regarding fixed-term appointment renewals.
Work with Extension administrators to supervise residential and county faculty and participate in outreach initiatives.
Identify and resolve problems; adjudicate disputes.

What You Will Need PhD or terminal degree in human development and/or family sciences, psychology, sociology, population and/or community health with a focus on HDFS topics, or a closely related field.
Tenured faculty at the Associate or Full Professor rank, or the ability to obtain tenure at this rank, in the College of Health at Oregon State University by the start date of this appointment.
Demonstrated organizational, administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills.
